Laminate Veneer

What is Laminate Veneer?

Beautiful teeth are important for everyone regardless of age, occupation and gender. For the management of discoloration of teeth, cracked/broken teeth and discoloration secondary to filling, a cosmetic procedure is performed by just attaching a porcelain onlay onto the front surface of teeth instead of cutting them completely. Laminate veneer is an excellent way to correct anterior teeth and provide teeth with an aesthetic appearance. It is the most protective prosthesis as teeth are cut down slightly with this method. Since the frame contains no metal and porcelain has its own structure, they are highly cosmetic restorations. You can have white teeth, fill the spaces between teeth and get a gorgeous smile with laminates.

Why Porcelain Veener ?

Porcelain veneer is a great alternative to crown. It is possible to change tone, shape and size of the teeth with a more conservative approach. Porcelain laminates are successfully applied for tetracycline-induced discoloration, trauma, discoloration following canal treatment and congenital or acquired defects. Very successful outcomes are also obtained for patients with diastema, namely gap between teeth.
How is porcelain veneer applied?

Patients need to attend at least 3 sessions for the construction of laminate veneers. A control impression is obtained in the first appointment and the evaluation is made. The tooth is cut and impression is obtained in the second session. Finally, bonding procedure is carried out.
First session is strikingly important, as the treatment is planned. The design of the smile that the patient expects should be evaluated well, and the patient should be duly informed in advance about the conditions that pose risks for the teeth and the dental structure; treatment options should be determined. A dental impression is obtained. The teeth and the face are photographed. Patient’s expectation, life style and needs are determined. An alternate model is created, if required, to evaluate the final status of the teeth.

Treatment process of porcelain veneer?

The teeth are cut down in the second session that takes around to 1.5 hours, although it may vary by the number of teeth. The tooth is abraded by approximately 0.5 mm under local anesthesia. Dental impression is obtained. Teeth are manufactured in 1 week, although it may vary depending on the number of teeth. Bonding procedure takes approximately 2 hours. Porcelain laminates are first placed onto the teeth and the tone, shade and shape are checked before they are bonded. The tone can be slightly modified with the adhesive. If all details are confirmed, laminates are bonded to the teeth using a special adhesive.

What are the Advantages of Laminate Veneer?

It is the most protective cosmetic dental procedure as the anterior surface of the tooth is slightly abraded.
Gingival harmony and protection are very good comparing to porcelain crowns. Oral hygiene is definitely easier.
A model will be created that is specific to you, and thus, you can see what kind of three dimensional appearance you will have in your own mouth before your teeth are cut.
Thanks to light transmittance, you are provided with natural looking teeth.
The discoloration caused by coffee and smoking is very minimal relative to natural teeth due to its porcelain surface.
The treatment period is short.
Wear resistance is very high.

What are the Disadvantages of Laminate Veneer?

It requires good and accurate laboratory and clinical work.
Hard foods should not be broken up by teeth. Although bonding agent is strong and laminates are resistant to wear, solid foods should not be broken up by teeth and laminates should be protected.
If you have teeth grinding – clenching like bruxism, you should inform your doctor.
Tooth sensitivity to cold and heat may occur immediately after bonding. It is an expected and reversible sensitivity.

Porcelain laminate veneers are probably the most esthetic means of creating a more pleasing and beautiful smile. They require a minimal amount of tooth reduction ( approximately .5 mm ) and are, therefore, a more conservative restoration than a crown. Our dental veneers allow us to alter tooth position, shape, size and color. They are not the only alternative for all esthetic abnormalities but are truly a remarkable restoration when they are the treatment of choice.
